Role specification : The Boundary Commission for England is an Advisory Non-Departmental Public Body funded by the Ministry of Justice. The Commission is required to keep the Parliamentary constituencies in England under continuous review.


This is an outstanding opportunity to sit on a high profile commission that plays an important role in shaping electoral boundaries in England. As a member, you will review Parliamentary constituencies and reach reasoned conclusions about recommendations on boundaries.
The Commission normally meets once every quarter. When a general review is underway an additional six to ten meetings take place. Each meeting requires two to three days of commission member's time including the reading of papers and the clearence of documents resulting from the meeting.


Person specification :

Post 1: A legal background is adventageous.

Post 2: A local government background is desirable.


Both posts: You must be a strong analytical thinker with excellent evaluation and reasoning skills. With a commitment to work in an independent and politically neutral manner; you should have had no active involvement in politics nor have been a member of a political party for the previous ten years. You should also understand the different tiers of local and central government and the services they provide.

Role specification : To help determine the number of new magistrates to be recommended for appointment each year in the Harrogate / Skipton area (2 posts) and in the Scarborough area (1 post).

To interview candidates for the magistracy and assess them for suitability. Interviews are conducted by panel of 3 members.

To attend business meetings of the Committee as required.

To assist with recruitment initiatives, where possible.

A non-magistrate member also acts as an independent assessor to ensure that the proper recruitment and selection processes have been followed.

The function of the Lord Chancellor’s North Yorkshire Advisory Committee is to recruit and recommend for appointment as Magistrates, candidates with the necessary qualities. In doing so, Committees must strive to improve the diversity on the benches by encouraging recruitment from under-represented groups in community.

The Committee is composed of magistrates and non-magistrates members.

Interviews and meetings are normally held during the working day, and take places in the magistrate Courthouses at Harrogate, Skipton and Scarborough. There are approximately 6-10 days of interviewing (depending on the number of applications received) and 3 meetings during the year.

Members are not normally appointed for a period which would extend beyond their 70th birthday.

Person specification : Good inter-personal skills.
Ability to participate in interviewing candidates for the Magistracy.
Experience of interviewing is an advantage but not essential.
Good judge of character and ability: objectivity.
Ability to articulate clear, well founded reasons on the suitability or otherwise of candidates.
Awareness of own prejudices and ability to set them aside.
Discretion in handling confidential information.
Understanding or willingness to acquire understanding of the needs of the Bench.
Willingness and ability to talk about the Magistracy and to participate in recruitment events.
Ability to work as a team member.
Commitment, dedication and enthusiasm.

Role specification : Time Commitment: Up to 4 meetings per year plus variable number of interview days per year dependant upon Magisterial vacancies

Role Description: Lay member to represent the Preston and Lancaster area.

As a member of the Lancashire Advisory Committee you will be responsible for interviewing, and making a recommendation to the Lord Chancellor of those candidates who have demonstrated that they possess the necessary qualities to become a Magistrate.

In terms of commitment, you will be required to attend for meetings, up to 4 times a year. The bulk of the work is undertaken through the interview process and you will need to allow sufficient time for interview preparation. The number of interview dates required each year from a lay member varies based upon the number of Magistrate vacancies and can range from approximately 6-12 days.

You will be a member of an interview panel of three. Each panel will contain representatives of both genders, one of which must be a lay member.

Members of the Advisory Committee will also be required, on an ad-hoc basis to investigate complaints or allegations of misconduct by Magistrates.

Renumeration: Non-remunerated. Members who incur a financial loss through attendance at meetings and other official committee business may claim an allowance in accordance with the standard rates for magistrates’ financial loss

Role Description: To help determine the number of new magistrates to be recommended for appointment in the Sheffield area; to recruit and recommend for appointment as magistrates candidates with the necessary qualities, ensuring that the Benches are well balanced in terms of gender etc.; to ensure that magistrates fulfil their undertaking to sit and undertake relevant training. There is scope therefore to belong to an interviewing panel for new magistrates and to be part of an investigation panel looking into cases of alleged misconduct or lack of competence by magistrates.
