Invitation: join the Paralegal Standards Working Party

Having successfully published National Competency Standards for Legal Secretaries earlier this year, we are now working on the second stage of the project: National Competency Standards for Paralegals.

The first draft of the standards will be available for comment during the summer.

As with the secretarial standards, government/nationally recognised legal qualifications will be available to those able to show that they comply with the standards.

You are welcome to join the 45 law firms, regulators and others who are either on our working party or with a watching brief.

Membership is free and there are no implications, legal or otherwise. Please contact standards@InstituteofParalegals.org , telephone 020 7887 1420 or read more >>

Careers Advice Day for Sixth Formers

The Institute is joining with the Law Society, Bar Council and Ilex in running a legal careers advice day in November aimed at sixth formers.

The event "So you want to be a lawyer?" will be held at the Law Society Hall in Chancery Lane, London on 21st November.

For further information please contact Rita Oscar at the Law Society on 020 7242 1222.

Companies Act 2006

The Companies Act 2006 (formerly the Company Law Reform Bill) received Royal Assent on 8th November 2006. The Act will effectively replace existing companies legislation with the exception of provisions relating to company investigations and community interest companies.

All parts of the Act will come into force by October 2009, but there will be early commencement of some of the provisions. Read more >>

Member Profile – The Police National Legal Database

We occasionally showcase members and member organisations:

The Police National Legal Database is a criminal law web-site containing up-to-date, and interpreted, legal information.

It also includes case law and standard offence wordings, which incorporate the “points to prove” and “police actions” that are vital to a fair and successful legal process within the criminal justice system.

An extensive portion of the site relates to topical questions and answers regarding the law. Extensive information is also provided about sentencing guidelines.

Originally created for the benefit of the police forces in England and Wales, the Database is available as a subscription service.

The easy-to-navigate site also provides links to other useful criminal law related sites, and is of benefit to all practitioners within the legal profession and criminal justice system. Read more >>

New Consumer Protection Legislation

In May many consumer protection laws (including most of the Trade Descriptions Act) were replaced by the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

The new regulations ban traders in all sectors engaging in unfair commercial (mainly marketing and selling) practices against consumers. The regulations also set out how commercial practices can be unfair by being misleading (by action or omission) or aggressive, and list 31 specific practices which are banned.  Read more >>

Information Round Up

  • Automatically calculate statutory redundancy pay  Read more >>
  • Suffering from legislative overload? Its not surprising: in 2007 the government introduced the equivalent of eight new laws a day - mostly in connection with commercial matters.
  • The Scotland Government is considering allowing alternative business structures for Scottish law firms. This follows the Law Society of Scotland voting in favour of ABS last month.
