Membership is open to individuals and organisations from all countries.

Individual Members

Fellowship and Associate Membership is open to lawyers, barristers practising paralegals and legal educators.

Student Membership is open to those studying on a law course.

Affiliate Membership is open to legal secretaries and all others undertaking a legal support role.

 

If your legal education/paralegal/work experience was obtained in the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands then you are eligible to join us as a UK member.  The following categories of membership are available to UK members:                        

  

   Affiliate

   Student

   Associate

   Fellow

   Educator

   Retired Fellow

If your legal education/paralegal experience was obtained outside of the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands then you are eligible to join us as an international member.

The following categories of membership are available to international members:

                       

   Affiliate (Int'l)

   Student (Int'l)

   Associate (Int'l)

   Fellow (Int'l)

   Educator (Int'l)

   Retired Fellow (Int'l)

We make this distinction because the UK designations are primarily a recognition that the person awarded the title has had a certain standard of experience/training in UK law, practice and/or procedure.

Membership Categories

 

Affiliate
 

This category is open to legal secretaries and all others undertaking a legal support role.

 
     
Student
  This category is open to you if you are not doing any legal work, but are studying, about to study, or have just finished studying any law course
     
Educator
  This category is open to you if you are of good ethical standing and are an instructor, trainer or programme coordinator for a legal course, or if you undertake a training role within your organisation in respect of paralegal matters.
 
     
Associate
  This category (which comes with the professional designation 'Associate Paralegal') is open to you if you are working, or about to start working, as a paralegal but do not yet qualify for Fellowship.
 
     

Fellow

 

This category (which comes with the professional designation 'Certified Paralegal') is open to you if you:

1. Have completed four years' qualifying employment, or

2. Have completed one year's qualifying employment AND have passed:

  • An English, Scottish or Welsh law degree or equivalent English, Scottish or Welsh legal qualification (such as the CPE), or
  • An examined law course set at degree level run by a recognised body

Or

3. Are a foreign lawyer or registered overseas paralegal in qualifying employment for one year; or

4. Have passed the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course or a Masters Degree in law, or

5. Are qualified in England/Wales or Scotland as a solicitor or barrister (practising or not)

This category is open to Fellows who have retired

Corporate Members

Membership provides opportunities for interested bodies to work with us and to discuss their organisational needs.

By corporate we mean paralegal advisory firms, local law societies, commercial companies, government departments, colleges, voluntary organizations, partnerships, business entities, etc. Corporate membership is open to organisations including:

  • Other bodies, nationally and internationally, that represent paralegals
  • Employers of paralegals
  • Suppliers of goods and services to paralegals

This list is not exhaustive, and we welcome enquiries from corporate bodies not included on it.

International corporate members are welcome.

International corporate members are treated the same as UK corporate members, although we regret that not all membership services may be available to members based outside of the UK.
