Supports the BTEC?

been:
- Approved by the government's Qualifications &
Curriculum Authority
- Backed by the Commission for Racial Equality
and its successor, the Equality & Human Rights Commission
- Warmly and publicly welcomed by the Department
for Constitutional Affairs (now the Ministry for Justice) for
assisting with diversity in the profession

of Paralegals
- Created by Edexcel, the UK 's largest national
awarding body

to overseas destinations) £850 + VAT

Philippa D’Netto at Tribal on 01904 550110 or at philippa.dnetto@tribalgroup.co.uk
Practice-orientated
Focus
The BTEC's
focus is practical: course workbooks are based upon real-life practitioner
files.
The BTEC
teaches practice and procedure, rather than academic principles
of law. Learners
study procedures,
deadlines and relevant documents, not case names, obscure points
of legal theory or how to read case reports. The goal is to help
people get jobs in the legal world, and
to assist
practicing paralegals and legal support staff to do their jobs better.
Who
Should Take it?
The BTEC is run at two
levels, both on the government's National Qualifications Framework:
Level 2: roughly equivalent
to GCSE standard (but shorter in duration)
Level 3: roughly equivalent
to A Level standard (but shorter in duration)
The level
2 course is ideal for:
School leavers and FE College students wanting an introduction to
the legal world
People already working in a legal environment who want more formal
legal training and/or a
legal qualification in recognition of their skills and experience
People wishing to change career and enter the legal field
The level
3 course is ideal for:
People who have completed the level 2 course and want to continue
their studies at a higher
level
Anyone needing to understand legal practice and procedure
Paralegals
Senior legal secretaries
Contracts managers and anyone who has to draft or negotiate contracts
How
Long is the BTEC?
Feedback
from both employers and employees was consistent: both wanted a
course which caught them what they needed to know, and in the shortest
possible time.
Since the
courses are distance learning, how long they take to complete is
up to each initial student. However, assuming five-seven hours'
study each week, we would estimate an average completion time of
approximately six months.
Is
It Only Run by Distance Learning?
The Institute
only offers the BTEC by distance learning. However, from September
2007 FE colleges nationwide will begin to run the courses.
Membership
of the Institute
Anyone
studying the BTEC (at either level) through the Institute or approved
FE colleges will be entitled to a 50% discount on membership of
the Institute for two years. This applies regardless of the level
that they join at.

Legal
Support Skills from The College of Law
Legal Support Skills comprises a series of cd-based interactive
training courses that run from any desktop PC or laptop. Support
staff can train individually, at their own pace and convenience,
with obvious benefits to the firm. Currently available are Working
in a Law Firm (an introductory level course) and Civil Litigation.
Further titles will follow in the autumn.
Each Legal
Support Skills course consists of four modules, each one contained
on a separate disk. In each module, the participant is given an
overview of the area through a combination of presentations and
comments from lawyers and support staff, a series of exercises to
work through to put into practice the information given, a series
of multiple choice questions to test knowledge as well as additional
written materials to read to supplement what has been learned from
working through the disk.
To complete
the course, the participant needs to work through the four disks
contained in the pack and read the supplementary written materials.
Each module takes around two hours to complete so it is expected
to take around eight hours to complete the course. The optional
test takes an additional two hours. Participants take the test online
and receive a certificate to record their achievement.

We
are a Law Society authorised provider of CPD training to the
legal and accountancy professions. We have over 600 substantive
law and personal development seminars scheduled in London and the
provinces from October 2006 to October 2007. The number
of delegates on each of these dates can vary enormously from 4 to
200 and are attended by delegates from various backgrounds
(from managing partners of top 100 firms to support staff from the
smallest high street practices). Our seminars are pitched at
introductory, intermediate, advanced and updating levels with the
emphasis on the practical, and we handpick our speakers based
on their experience, expertise and presentation skills. We
are a small company with over 70 years cumulative experience
and know how and we aim to offer something completely different
to the mainstream CPD providers. Most of our clients view face
to face CPD training as a "rip off" and our aim
is to change that perception.
